Horus was the son of Isis and Osirus, Osirus was killed by his evil brother, Set. In battle to avenge his father's murder, Horus lost his eye, but Thoth restored it by magic. Set, when not plotting murder, is trying to hurt us anyway he can, such as earthquakes, boils, etc. Displaying the Eye of Horus warns Set to stay away, you are protected from his evil.
